Biography

As a medical anthropologist and PhD candidate in the Department of Anthropology at the Université de Montréal, I conduct research on the sociocultural and ethical dimensions of care—long-term and palliative—and aging.

I previously pursued studies at the Université de la Polynésie française, specializing in Polynesian studies, before turning my attention to (post-)pandemic sociosanitary contexts. As part of my doctoral research, I am conducting a multisite ethnography on lived experiences in long-term care centres (CHSLDs) and maisons des aînés (MDAs) in Québec. My work examines the organizational, relational, and moral tensions shaping dynamics, practices, and dilemmas between life and the end of life. Through a collaborative approach involving care providers, residents, family caregivers, and administrators, I foreground the voices of those working and living within these settings.

In parallel, I am a member of the Marguerite d’Youville Research Chair in Humanistic Nursing Interventions (Faculty of Nursing and the Université de Montréal Hospital Research Centre—CRCHUM). My research and teaching activities within the Chair focus on the co-construction of a repository of digital pedagogical resources and on the partnership-based development of interprofessional health education on aging.

I have several years of research and teaching experience on care trajectories in interdisciplinary settings, including at the CHU Sainte-Justine, CRIR, Institut SHERPA, School of Social Work, and Faculty of Medicine. My work has addressed palliative care in contexts of diversity, rehabilitation care, pediatric psychosocial development, pandemic ethics and the care of older adults, as well as inequalities in access to healthcare in migratory contexts. I am a member of the Quebec Network for Research in Palliative and End-of-Life Care (RQSPAL) and The Association for Anthropology, Gerontology and the Life Course (AAGE). I also teach undergraduate- and graduate-level anthropology seminars as a guest lecturer. My additional research interests include bioethics, medical assistance in dying (MAID), suffering, moralities, places and structures of care, and crisis contexts.

Areas of Expertise

My anthropological research focuses primarily on the social and cultural dimensions of care. I examine ethical dilemmas and moral pluralism in palliative and end-of-life care, as well as relational issues and organizational transformations in long-term care. I use ethnographic methods in long-term care centres (CHSLDs) and maisons des aînés (MDAs), collaborating with older residents, family caregivers, healthcare staff, and administrators. More specifically, my research explores care team members’ perceptions, interactions, and medical representations, as well as their experiences, practices, and care dynamics.

My additional research and teaching work in nursing science focuses on the partnership-based development of interprofessional health education on aging in Quebec.
